Bird
|
One morning, at Kibbutz Kfir
Blum, we were awoken by lots of birds. So my husband and I went
for a walk along the river Jordan and we saw thousands of birds,
migrating north from Africa to Europe and Asia. Israel is a land
bridge between the three continents and so not only conquering armies
but flocks of birds come there on there way to someplace else.

The Dome of the Rock
|
This is a view of the Dome of
the Rock as seen from the east side of the city, near the Hotel
Intercontinental and the Garden of Gethsemanie. In the foreground
is the Golden Gate, which was bricked over in the middle ages to
prevent
the Jewish Messiah from returning to Jerusalem. Also in the
foreground is a muslim cemetary, again placed there to prevent the
Jewish Messiah from returning to Jerusalem (the Messiah must be a
priest, and priests are forbidden to go near a grave).
The sky is the hovering of the Shekina, the holy spirit, over the site
of the ancient Jewish temple.

The market in the old city
|
The old city has many passages
such as this one where small vendors have set up their shop in an arch
way. In some places, the only light is from a naked light
bulb, which creates fascinating patterns of light and shadow. |

Camel
|
This camel carries tourists to
Petra, an ancient city cut into the stone in Jordan.
I like camels. I brought a piece of currant cake from the hotel,
and when we came to this camel, it found the cake in my pocket. I fed
it
the cake. Then, my husband said, "Say cheese" and both the camel
and I looked in his direction.
We rode the camels. They are called "ships of the desert" but the
ride is not comfortable.
